Hatebreed Brings Positive Aggression to House of Blues Las Vegas

Hatebreed brought the Summer Slaughter Tour to House of Blues Las Vegas on August 22 with Terror, Incantation, Gates to Hell, Torture, and Creeping Death.

Six bands. Early doors. Death metal, hardcore, slam, beatdown, old tour shirts, fresh merch, and a floor that kept opening all night.

Creeping Death started the show with Texas death metal. Thick riffs. Low vocals. Straight-ahead drums. The first pit opened early while people were still walking in.

Torture followed with slam-heavy death metal. Low, slow, and nasty. The guitars dragged, the vocals stayed buried.

Gates to Hell brought death metal with hardcore underneath it. Hard stops. Big riffs. Quick bursts of violence. Their songs moved in chunks.

Incantation came in with old-school death metal. Darker, deeper, and heavier in a different way than the bands before them. Slow parts dragged across the room. Fast parts cut through it.

Terror changed the floor fast. Scott Vogel had people moving from the first few seconds. Crowd surfers came over the barricade. The pit opened wide. Hardcore dancers took every open piece of floor they could find. Vogel kept it simple: move up, sing, get in the air, look out for each other.

Aggression moved through the room without turning ugly. People were hitting the floor hard, but they were also pulling each other up. Bodies came over the rail all night. Security caught them. Friends grabbed friends. Strangers checked on each other. Someone went down, hands reached in.

Hatebreed closed the night with songs that turned anger into motion. Jamey Jasta walked out to a room already worked over by five previous bands..

Hatebreed songs are so heavy but easily singable. “Destroy Everything,” “Live for This,” “Looking Down the Barrel of Today,” “This Is Now,” and “I Will Be Heard” are short, direct, and made for a room full of people screaming the words back. Survive. Push back. Stand up. Do not fold.

That was the best part of the night. The violence had rules. Mosh pits opened. Crowd surfers rolled forward. Hardcore dancers threw kicks and windmills. The rail stayed busy. The floor stayed alive. Nobody had to pretend it was gentle, but it never felt rotten and malicious.

House of Blues rumbled all night.  Big enough for six bands, small enough to keep the pressure in the room. Each band pushed a different side of heavy. Creeping Death brought Texas death metal. Torture brought slam. Gates to Hell brought death metal with hardcore teeth. Incantation brought the underground rot. Terror brought hardcore at full speed. Hatebreed came with power.

By the end, the room looked used. Sweat on shirts. Hair stuck to faces. People leaning over the barricade. Security is still catching bodies. Friends yelling over the last feedback.

There was a healthy push of positive aggression that brought as many hugs as flying fists.
